 Abstract 

Background. Preventing crimes in correctional institutions administering criminal penalties in the form of imprisonment is one of the goals of the penal enforcement law. In correctional institutions, convicts are influenced in order to form law-abiding behavior among them and prevent them from committing crimes in the future. However, despite this, a fair number of crimes are committed in places of imprisonment, which is confirmed by statistics. The article focuses on analyzing the main determinants of recidivism in correctional institutions administering criminal penalties in the form of imprisonment. Materials and methods. The authors use the historical and legal method to study the historical aspect of activity, legal sources analysis and synthesis to summarize the re-sults, statistical analysis to assess the quantitative composition of persons in places of im-prisonment. Results. In the course of the study, the quantitative indicators of the charac-teristics of convicts sentenced in places of imprisonment are analyzed, the main determinants of recidivism in correctional institutions are determined, the terms «aggres-sion», «criminal aggression» are examined as factors influencing the formation of criminal behavior among convicts. The causes of recidivism among convicted juveniles are specifi-cally analyzed. The principles of the separation of convicts sentenced in places of impris-onment are considered. Conclusions. In order to reduce recidivism within correctional in-stitutions, a comprehensive approach is required, including ensuring the inevitability of punishment for corruption crimes among penal system employees, creating mechanisms for the early detection of convicts prone to committing offenses, as well as forming a uni-fied system to prepare convicts for release from places of imprisonment.
